A Lifetime of Discovery
This is my car. A '98 Landrover Discovery with over 100k miles and lots of character (dents, dings, scratches, etc). This car has so many stories to tell I could devote an entire blog to them. What follows is just one of those...When I moved to Norman for school I met a group of guys that grew up in Norman. A few of them had spent a lot of time "mudding" in and around the river because one of them, Chad, lived nearby and had access to it. Driving around a big bad british 4x4 complete with Hellas and a brushguard (I've since gotten rid of them both) means that you have to be ready to back up that inaudible statement everytime you get into the car. So...my new friends finally convinced me to take my car to the river with them one evening in Oct. I was driving and my friend Ben was in the passenger seat. Chad and a few others weren't far behind in another car. We ran my car through the river, across sand bars, and ended up in a muddy pond a few hundred feet from the river. We slipped and slided and threw up mud for what seemed like an hour before we noticed it was getting dark and decided we should be heading back. When my wheels hit the bank of the pond they stuck right into the muck. With two wheels rammed into a wall of mud and the other two taking a swim, I wasn't going anywhere. We called some friends with a truck and after a half hour of digging around in the mud to get a tow rope connected my car was out of the pond and I was heading back to civilization. The experience was a sort of "deflowering" for my car. I waited a day or two before washing off the mud, so my car could wear it as a testimonial of it's "first time" off-road. I love my car and I'm looking forward to living out my life with it.
